MacOS 9, MacOS 8, System 7

Notes for making a MacOSXConnection are also available.

Almost all of the connection software for the Newton was written for Pre-X Mac OS versions. It is also written to use AppleTalk or serial connections. AppleTalk can be run over either LocalTalk (via a serial cable, or PhoneTalk) or EtherNet.

If you have a Mac with serial ports (modem or printer), and a MessagePad1x0 all you need is a normal Newton serial cable to connect your Newton. (This is also known as a Mac printer cable). If you have a MessagePad2000 or MessagePad2100, then you'll need the Interconnect port adapter - see AboutDongles.

You can also use a wired EtherNet card or wireless network card to connect your Newton to your desktop. This requires that you have configured AppleTalk to run over your Mac's network interface (EtherNet or AirPort) and that you have NIE 2.0 and the right Ethernet drivers installed on your Newton, unless you use DIL Tester (below). See the chuma.org ethernet page.

As for connection software, there's a few main tools that you'll be using:
