Newton Fast Serial Docking

AdrianoAngelillis (29 Febbraio 2005) website

Although the MessagePad could connect in a lot of ways with a desktop, the serial connection is the first type i tried since i had my first Newton. Then found this type of connection very stable on D/L mp3 songs for MadMax. To docking the MP on a Mac without a serial printer port you will need an USB to serial adapter. I have often used the Keyspan USB to twin serial (RS422) series, but sometimes these adapters are hard to find or simply more expensive than a MessagePad itself! Take a look at Amazon prices.

Had the chance to try different type of USB to serial adapters, and on eBay you could find very cheap USB to RS232 adapters which will get you easily connected at the cheapest possible cost.

I succesfully, stably synchronized the MP with my Mac at 230400kbps using such a cheap usb to rs232 adapter using Escale on OS X / NewtonConnectionUtilities on OS X (in classic emulation) / NewtonConnectionUtilities (NCU) on OS 9 (with Serial Enabler locked at 230400kbps on the serial printer port).

A note to Escale for OS X: when 230400kbps is choosen in the preference panel, it could happen (very hardly) that the connection hangs-up, or the application crashes, and consequently fail to launch. In this case the RS232 to USB adapter will need to be unplugged and then plugged back to have Escale again starting up and succefully connecting to the MP2100 without rebooting.

The USB to RS232 drivers are downloadable free for both Mac OS 9 and OS X platforms from: Ram Electronics - Beagle Soft - SerialIo

DockingTricks

Escale can operate at speed of 230K when using a Keyspan Twin Serial Adapter, but it will need a "push"!

Here is the trick:

*3. Choose the first port USA28X****P1.1

The Serial Enabler for Mac had been made by Markus Fritze who also wrote the (free) Newton Keyboard Enabler extension which will let you use the Newton Keyboard on your Mac. mp2100-2.gif

The Newton Keyboard Enabler will let you fully use your Mac as you i will do with an AppleExtendedKeyboard.

(i.e. you can reboot your Mac with a Newton keyboard just holding the keys Command-Option-Delete, as the same action is possible to restart your MP2100/eMate)

I would be happy to hear about a Newton Keyboard Enabler for OS X. Hope someone would take a look to the german SDK.

Newton standard serial docking infos are available here

If you are tired of all these tricks and want an easy, cheap and nice solution to sync your newton with any desktop/laptop computer running any OS, please consider that i have built the NewtUSB, available here
